Rudolf Stockar made his name in the design of ceramics, jewellery and furniture. His career was particularly dominated by the decorative arts between 1915 and 1927 when Stockar worked as the director of Artěl – an important designers’ co-operative running the production and distribution of its members’ work. Most leading artists of the period, the director notwithstanding, contributed their designs to Artěl’s range. Whatever style Stockar brushed past throughout his career – Czech Cubism, National Style, Art Deco, Functionalism – and whatever the use of the item, all his designs bear the mark of a confident original creator in complete control of the material.
