The Janak chair, 1911

 author:    Pavel Janak (1882–1956)
 material:    solid stained beech frame,
 walnut veneered seat
 dimensions:    W 44 cm D 49 cm H 92 cm

The angular, cat-like form of Janak's chair made it among the best known, most frequently published pieces of early Czech Cubism. Its apparent fragility is deceptive: in fact the chair is sturdy and comfortable. Its complex structure, however, makes it a challenge for even the most skilled cabinet maker.
