Modernista is reissuing some of the best works from the golden age of Czech design – the years 1910 to 1938 when the Czech lands were transformed from a small, though industrially advanced, part of the Austro-Hungarian empire to a free republic. In this volatile environment unique talents emerged – for instance Brno-born architect and designer Adolf Loos, who stirred up Vienna and Prague with his stark façades; the Czech Cubists, who daringly applied Picasso and Braque's principles to three dimensional design; or pioneer of mass production Jindřich Halabala, who strove with ingeniously bent wood and tubular steel to create furnishings that were functional, affordable and well-designed. Modernista has become a centre of knowledge and production expertise in early 20th century Czech design. We work closely with leading Czech cultural institutions (in particular the Museum of Decorative Arts, UPM) as well as the designers' descendants when looking for modernist classics worthy of reproduction. Our selection is guided by whether the original materials and production technology still exist today. More about Czech Modernism |
